Am I able to get a first class degree in mechanical engineering?

Image result for degree classesYes, you can. You need a 87% average for the final two years which isn't impossible. Put in the work and you can get there.

I was in the same position as you. I thought that I wasn't really trying that getting great academic results would be easy if I put in the effort. Maybe your situation is different. I didn't put in the effort because I was scared what failing (not getting great marks) would mean. When I did give it a red-hot go, I found it very challenging indeed.

There are heaps of resources out there. I highly recommend Cal Newport's blog. Here are a couple of the things that helped me:

Be hyper-organised. Do everything you can to have any resource within reach, your notes are filed neatly/logically, you use different colour pens and have them with you at all times, your digital filing system is tidy, you have a time-management system that works, you have prepared for your need for food/water the night before.

Hit the ground running. During the first few weeks of a new semester, the workload is lighter. You this to your advantage. Instead of using the light load to catch up, get ahead. Make sure you have all the required textbooks and materials, do your printing ahead of time. Learn the material before it's covered in lectures. This gives you an opportunity to try and get your head around concepts at your own pace and then during a lecture solidfy your understanding.

Get work experience in Mechanical Engineering. This provided me with a huge boost in motivation. Learning new concepts became much easier because the theory solved problems I had seen before. For me, this was a huge shift in my academic life.

Good luck!
